‘LES COULEURS DE MALAISIE’

Les couleurs de Malaisie is a collection of eight works created using oil pastels on a
black background, by artist Sergio S. Paris. The series offers a visual and conceptual
exploration of the duality between the urban and the natural landscapes of Malaysia
— a country marked by vivid contrasts and diverse beauty.
The collection is divided into two groups: four pieces depict urban scenes, inspired
by the vibrant pulse of Kuala Lumpur, where neon lights, steel, and concrete trace a
constantly evolving city. The other four capture the calm and majesty of Malaysia’s
natural environments, from the tea-covered hills of Boh to the beaches and tropical
forests of Langkawi. Each image is an emotional interpretation rather than a literal
representation.
The black background serves as a symbolic canvas from which these opposing
worlds emerge, intensifying the colors and lending the images an almost ethereal
quality. This interplay between darkness and light, between what is built and what is
organic, creates a visual tension that encourages reflection on the complexities of
modern development and its impact on the environment.
Sergio S. Paris uses the language of color to build a dialogue between two realities
that coexist but rarely find harmony. ‘Les couleurs de Malaisie’ is a visual meditation
on the identity of a country in transition — and an invitation to rediscover its beauty
through the eyes of an artist who observes with sensitivity both the pulse of the city
and the whisper of the jungle.
